They are easy enough to fix:
"multi-line 
string"
becomes:
"multi-line \n"
"string"

Which is actually easier to get the indentation correct with.

The API changed, or the ABI changed?

The API should be stable.  And only for C++ should the ABI have noticeably
changed.
