Anthony and Kevin-
Seems that the culprit was coming from libvirt. It runs fine when all
operations are done "by hand".
Thank you so much for your feedback

Sorry to bother you but I have a quick question.
I am trying to attach a pci express Infiniband card to a guest VM via
KVM (Fedora Core12 version kvm/qemu still uses pcbios).
Unfortunately it fails. I suspect (please correct me if I'm wrong)
it's due to the lack of PCIexpress support in the bios as mentioned
in the talk of Isaku Yamahata and Akio Takebe during last Xen
If so, would seabios fix it?
Thank you for your time
I don't know. I think you need to ask the KVM folks.
Yes, please send your query to kvm(a)vger.kernel.org.
There are a lot of reasons passthrough can fail. It's usually not going
to be the firmware.
