Seems fine IMO, but we should check with Nico since he's currently the most active maintainer. There's some extra maintenance burden, but it seems like a worthy trade-off for the extra testing and CI we get in return.
I tried to find more time to look into it and failed. I'll merge
this now (after branching 1.1.x, as I don't want to confuse
package maintainers with something I haven't looked into)
and we'll see where it gets us. If we can figure out how to
build with this for all including the weirder targets (DOS,
Windows, OSX?), I'd love to replace the current Makefile.
But I fear `ninja` won't be available everywhere? and I don't
see an alternative backend atm (haven't looked for some time,
though).
I guess, I'll just have to forward the review to somebody already
experienced with Meson, in case anybody touches the Makefile ;)
