Dear all,
just tested two coreboot + SeaBios images on a T530 that were identical except one time with ME and one time without (using the compile option, rev 54db255529ce8afc689ae425c24b7fb1d45654e8).
Unfortunately it seems that ME does some CPU fan initialization (ACPI?) that coreboot doesn't, i.e. on the image without ME the CPU fan didn't start anymore = not usable. I tested with Fedora 26 and ubuntu 14.02 LTS up to temperatures of 98 degrees celsius, but it wouldn't start. I didn't test manual fan control.
What is interesting:
After re-trying the cleaned ME build right after the one with ME, the CPU fan did start at first. Then however I did a hard reset (remove power except for CMOS battery, press and hold the power button multiple times for some seconds, attach power and boot) and the CPU fan wouldn't work anymore (it actually spins a couple of times before SeaBios pops up, but after that it's dead).
So maybe ME writes something to NVram or whatever that makes it work and the NVram is cleaned upon hard reset? I don't know that topic well enough...
@other users: Be warned to do a hard reset on a T530 with ME removed - your laptop might die soon... ;-)
Anyway in case someone has an idea or got it working contrary to my statement, happy to hear from you!
I guess I'll also file a bug with the ME cleaner author.

Though unlikely, the following could also be the case: with the cleaned ME the system is in a weird state where it can't correctly write the EC RAM registers. But I really doubt that if the host behaves well other- wise.
In any case, I'd check the coreboot log for errors.

Not at all. ME can control clock output frequency at GPIO 64/65/66/67. From coreboot you can only set these pins to NATIVE mode. So, if you EC/SIO take clock input from PCH, without ME they may work incorrectly.
But looks like at t530 this outputs sets in GPIO mode. David, can you dump gpios from system with running ME (can be done by 'inteltool -g').

you are right. I forgot that the ThinkPad EC is more a Super-I/O and may need the PCH to work (and not the other way around). And it's indeed connected to SUSCLK (GPIO62). Although I don't know what it does with that clock, it's possible that the ME messes with it.
But looks like at t530 this outputs sets in GPIO mode. David, can you dump gpios from system with running ME (can be done by 'inteltool -g').
GPIO62 is set to native mode.

Did that for both flashes, logs are attached (also includes journalctl and cbmem logs).
The only difference I noticed from the cbmem logs though was that apparently without ME coreboot only sees 8GB/16GB of memory? Still, the fan didn't spin without ME after a hard reset. It once again did spin before I did the hard reset...
I also tried to get the cbmem logs before the truncation note, but couldn't find out how to enable PRERAM_CBMEM_CONSOLE_SIZE (I guessed that's the relevant option).

@Flashing: I did use external flashing with the powered T530 in the past, but today it stopped working reliably for the 8M chip (the 4M still worked), so I switched to internal from Fedora now. flashrom reported verification success for that. P.S.: Just tested the current ME-cleaner version with the OEM BIOS version: The CPU fan did spin - even after hard resets.
So a) The issue is only related to coreboot. b) It is possible to do better here.

@Flashing: I did use external flashing with the powered T530 in the past, but today it stopped working reliably for the 8M chip (the 4M still worked), so I switched to internal from Fedora now. flashrom reported verification success for that. P.S.: Just tested the current ME-cleaner version with the OEM BIOS version: The CPU fan did spin - even after hard resets.
So a) The issue is only related to coreboot. b) It is possible to do better here.
I gave it one last shot and externally re-flashed the coreboot image with cleaned ME and... well the CPU fan worked even after several hard resets.
At first I thought I'm stupid and then I tried the following:
Internally re-flash with the coreboot version with ME --> CPU fan worked as expected (I had ME after all).
Internally re-flash with the coreboot image with cleaned ME from above. --> After some hard resets the CPU fan stopped working as I had experienced it before.
Internally re-flash with the OEM BIOS version with cleaned ME. --> CPU fan worked again after some hard resets.
Externally re-flash with the coreboot version with cleaned ME without CMOs battery. --> CPU fan still worked after 3-4 hard resets. --> SUCCESS!
In short: Flashing the OEM version with cleaned ME *before* flashing coreboot seems to fix the issue. If you flash from the OEM version with ME, you'll run into the issue after some hard resets...
I don't really understand why, but I'll certainly enjoy the results! ... and a beer now. ^^

This is somehow what I already expected after your last mail. Flashing the cleaned ME firmware alone leaves the ME in a bad state. The vendor BIOS seems to know a way to fix that. coreboot doesn't? I've never looked close at the code, maybe we just miss a global reset at some point.
If you want to go on, you can compare the output of `intelmetool` for the good and bad states with cleaned ME. I'm not sure if it will show a difference, but if we're lucky, it might give us a hint how to fix it.
