Hello,
I'm trying to check the potential compatibility of the s1200kp intel server board. [1] It's mini-itx and supports ECC ram, making it attractive for use in a NAS device. (cases with multiple hotswap bays and room for an itx board abound, but few itx boards have ECC capability)
The chipset is listed as the C206, which is part of cougar point. The socket is FCLGA1155 and I've seen the board with an i3-3220 (3rd gen ivy bridge).
However, I'm having a really hard time finding information on whether coreboot supports the chipset. (never mind the superio etc)
It seems the compatibility list [2] on the wiki is out of date (and slated for retirement) and the docs at [3] are still mostly incomplete. From grepping through the source and the coreboot blog [4] there's been a port (in coreboot 4.2) to at least one other cougar point platform. (apple/macbookair4_2) The blog post also mentions that support for ivy bridge and cougar point come from an FSP binary. There is also a coreboot blog entry linking to the following article [5] discussing support for these chips being merged.
This lack of accessible documentation makes it difficult to find good porting candidates for hardware of *any* generation. Are all ivy bridge CPUs supported? Does the FSP binary support all cougar point chipsets?

Looking at the releases, "3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processors with mobile Intel® HM76 and QM77 chipsets (formerly Chief River Platform: Ivy Bridge and Panther Point)" seems the most probable, but I'm skeptical that the C206 is equivalent to a HM76 or QM77.
Can anyone familiar with the FSPs speak to how likely it is that the same FSP would support a chipset in the same family which isn't specifically named? Or would intel only release an FSP targeting those two chipsets likely to be used by OEMs in the wild?

The native RAM initialization for SNB/IVB currently lacks ECC support; there are two patches in Gerrit (22214 & 22215) that add part of the ECC support, but IIRC they still lack support for clearing the RAM after a cold boot. If you don't clear the ECC RAM there, you'll probably get a whole lot of ECC errors, since the RAM contents are random-ish before that and so at least for some words the error correction bits will be wrong before that. As far as I've seen the board doesn't contain a BMC, so you don't have to poke some undocumented registers in it to have the SPD EEPROMS on the DIMMs connected to the PCH's SMBus. That was an issue when lynxis and I started porting the HP gen 8 microserver; someone else figured that out in the meantime, but I think that's not published yet. The SNB/IVB CPUs with 2 memory channels (laptop, desktop and small server; basically everything except the E5/E7 Xeons from that series) and the corresponding PCHs should be more or less supported by the native code; some PCI-IDs or CPUIDs might be missing there, but that's easily fixable. Ok, and some bits relating to PCIe 3 and USB3 also still have room for improvement, but the PCH on your board doesn't have USB3 support anyway. Splitting the PEG PCIe port is also untested; I got a board that supports that configuration, but didn't have the time to port that one yet.
No idea how well that platform is supported by FSP/MRC; only used the native RAM init on SNB/IVB.
C206 should be the same silicon die as the 6 series PCHs (H61, H67, ...) with the only difference being the fuse settings.

It should be easy to support. I don't think schematics are available, though. While it is not a blocker, it means stuff like GPIO configuration will need to be copied from vendor firmware (misconfigurations could result in short-circuits).

coreboot has support for sanybridge and ivybridge platforms using either "native" (open source) RAM init or the systemagent-r6.bin in 3rdparty/blobs.There once was FSP 1.0 support as well, but it was dropped because nobody really used it.
Unfortunately, native RAM init does not have support for ECC memory initialization, at least last time I checked.
I do not know which superio your board has, but you would want to make sure it is supported (or just add support for it) because serial ports on the SuperIO can be used to get coreboot log output.

Among the most popular sandybridge and ivybridge devices in coreboot, there are the Lenovo Thinkpad series. There are several sandybridge and ivybridge Thinkpads in the coreboot tree.
The mainboard-specific documentation has pages for several sanybridge and ivybridge mainboards. I am sure of that since I added documentation for two of these boards myself. I think there are also some pages about the memory controller inside these processors.
Inside the tree, take a look at src/northbridge/intel/sandybridge and src/southbridge/intel/bd82x6x. Even though the names refer to sandybridge and cougarpoint, the code also supports ivybridge and pantherpoint.

I think the only sandybridge and ivybridge things without coreboot support are the "enthusiast" LGA2011 platforms with the Patsburg (X79) chipset.
FSP is not used on sandybridge nor ivybridge coreboot.
If you ask me, *anything* is a potential porting candidate if you feel like investing the time.
