This means that editors don't recognize the files, and don't
open them with highlighting and any other specific editor functionality.
I think the intent is really to enable editors recognizing them as a make file. .mk and .mak seem to be common for that.
.mk seems to be picked up by emacs and launch makefile mode, but .mak isn't by default. Maybe that would be a better file suffix? I don't know how other editors handle it.
