Anyone who wants to run a Real operating system and be able to use DOS command line compilers should consider using FreeBSD rather than Linux. FreeBSD can run DOS executables in VM86 mode much like OS/2 and Windows, but without the instability. In Linux, your only option is DOSemu (as Jeff mentioned) which emulates a PC in software, which runs *way* slower.
